American Road Artist: Biographical

Jim Mott is a nationally recognized artist based in Rochester, NY. He has a BA in Visual Studies and Religion from Dartmouth College and an MFA in Painting from the University of Michigan School of Art. He is best known for landscape paintings that combine sense of place with emotionally engaged, lively technique; and for his Itinerant Artist Project.

He started the Itinerant Artist Project (IAP) – "exchanging art for hospitality across the USA" – in 2000 (see: project background).
The project's several art road trips have generated tremendous personal productivity as well as popular interest and media attention.

Mott and the IAP have been featured on the NBC TODAY Show, the Out of Bounds radio hour, CBC Radio Q (Canadian public radio); and in the Christian Science Monitor, American Artist magazine, Art Business News, Wall Street Journal Online, and several other publications (see: press).

Painting tours, IAP exhibits, media coverage, and presentations to varied audiences around the country have allowed Mott to reach millions of people with stories and ideas that gently inspire, empower and entertain, while underscoring the value, the challenges, and the rewards of sharing deeply with each other and building real connections – against the flow of a mainstream culture that promotes an increasingly virtual, shallow, and fragmented existence.

Art, he notes, can be a facilitator in this process of building connection, as well as a metaphor for the gifts we all possess.

When not involved in IAP activities, Mott pursues art and music at home and works as a freelance environmental consultant. He occasionally publishes poems, short essays and technical articles on art methods. His paintings are found in private and institutional collections around the US as well as in Canada, England, and France. He is married to the writer Sonja Livingston.
